The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has inaugurated the Science Annex Building and the Ancillary building adjacent to the EdHotel.

The new Science Annex Building comprises 9 ultra-modern teaching and research laboratories, 40-well well-furnished offices for faculty and researchers, and a fully resourced library.

Other facilities in the building include 15 specialised research rooms, including preparation rooms, cold rooms, dark rooms, dangerous explosive rooms, and instrument rooms, a conference room with a 160-seating capacity, and a computer room accommodating 200 seats.

Opening the edifice, the Vice-Chancellor said the construction of the Science Annex Building was initiated in 2005 as a GETFund-sponsored project. However, due to insufficient budgetary allocations by the Fund, the execution of the project stalled and was suspended in 2016.

“Determined not to let this critical facility remain uncompleted, in June 2021, the University’s management took a bold step to pre-finance the completion of the project using internally generated funds to provide the much-needed additional offices and laboratories to support academic work,” he noted.

Prof. Boampong added that the facility would empower faculty, researchers, and students to compete on the global stage, drive innovation, and produce solutions to pressing national and internal challenges.

“Here, the next generation of scientists, innovators and change makers will be nurtured and inspired,” he added.

He said the inauguration of the building was a testament to what foresight, tenacity, and perseverance of purpose could achieve.

Prof. Boampong expressed gratitude to the UCC Council, faculty, staff, students, contractor, GETfund for their assistance.

In a related development, the Vice-Chancellor has commissioned the Ancillary building adjacent to the EdHotel.

The edifice, made up of a gymnasium and a standard swimming pool for recreation and relaxation, was financed by the Institute of Education.

The new building also boasts of pantry, server, and restaurant, a bar for dining and hospitality services, offices for senior managers to ensure efficient operations, amongst others.

Inaugurating the facility, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, said: “These additions elevate EdHotel into a premier hospitality facility within the sub-region, making it a key resource for international academic exchanges, conferences, training programmes, and business engagements.

He indicated that the commissioning adds to the growing list of major projects completed and inaugurated under his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of the University.
