IEPA Marks International Day of Education
The Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA), a UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence for West Africa at the University of Cape Coast, has commemorated the 2026 International Day of Education.
The International Day of Education is an annual international observance dedicated to celebrating the role of education in bringing global peace and sustainable development.
The event was on the theme: "The power of youth in co-creating Education: How can we make education more meaningful for young people?"
IEPA marked the day with student leaders of University Practice Senior High School.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of IEPA, Prof. Michael Boakye-Yiadom, advised the student leaders to prioritise ethical leadership as a foundation for sustainable development.
He described the programme as highly successful, adding that “the overall objective was to equip students to be better leaders in their various schools and to impact their world positively.”
“I believe leadership does not just happen, and we have to be intentional about how to develop and unearth their skills”, he added.
It is very important to engage them at tender ages for them to be well-prepared for various leadership roles wherever they find themselves,” he said.
He assisted the students in understanding the concept of leadership, the qualities of a good leader, and the need to develop leadership skills to lead others.
He said IEPA was focused on virtue as well as other aspects of the lives of the students.
The Deputy Director-General in charge of Administration and General Services at the IEPA, Mrs. Ama Neeqwaye Tetteh, speaking on the topic, “17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)", said the goals were the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.
She said the SDGs were established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, through which countries of the world collectively pledged to eradicate poverty, find sustainable and inclusive development solutions, ensure everyone’s human rights, and generally make sure that no one is left behind by 2030.
