Department Sociology and Anthropology Holds Staff-Students Consultative Meeting and Dinner

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has organised a staff-students consultative meeting and dinner as part of activities marking the 2026 Sandwich Session.

The event brought together staff and students to engage in discussions on academic and departmental matters while fostering closer interaction, collaboration and collegiality between the two groups.

In her opening remarks, the Head of the Department, Prof. Georgina Yaa Oduro, described the gathering as an opportunity for staff and students to interact beyond the conventional classroom setting, get to know one another better and gain a deeper understanding of the Department and the University.

Prof. Oduro also disclosed that the Department was working towards introducing an M. Phil top-up programme for the Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology of Peace and Security and programmes in Social Work at different levels. She assured students that they would soon have the opportunity to pursue these programmes.

She encouraged participants to relax and enjoy the occasion, noting that the event was intended to break the usual barriers between lecturers and students, help them de-stress and create an atmosphere that promotes friendship, openness and collegiality.

The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Simon Mariwah, urged students to openly share their challenges, concerns and suggestions to help the Department improve teaching and learning. He also encouraged them to serve as good ambassadors of the University by positively representing UCC and sharing their experiences with others.

Prof. Mariwah acknowledged that, like any institution, UCC faced its share of challenges but assured the students that Management and the various academic units remained committed to addressing these challenges and ensuring the delivery of quality education.

He noted that the gathering provided a valuable platform for staff and students to interact, exchange ideas and identify practical ways of enhancing teaching and learning within the Department.

Other lecturers of the Department took turns to engage the students, respond to their questions and offer guidance on their academic and professional development. They encouraged the students to aspire to higher heights, take their studies seriously and uphold the values of the University as responsible ambassadors.

As part of the event, the 2026 Sandwich students presented an air conditioner to the Department as a gesture of appreciation and support.
